Advertisement Planning

We decided to go for 2 initial poster designs for our music video advertisment both consisting of a grey background, black font, a picture of the artist (either a close up or full body shot), the album release date, songs from the album, a social media link and the name of the album and artist.

We still havent decided which style of poster to go for, but we agreed that these styles are the most effective as they portray the artist the best as a big picture is displayed meaning that the audience can clearly see the artist of the album in addition to the name of the album due to the font being large meaning it will stand out. Additionally a grey background is used as it illustrates the mood of the songs as well as the genre of music. However, we used black font to show the rock side of the indie rock genre.

Editing Post- 13th December

On December 13th we completed our final draft for our music video by adding in the footage we had taken the day before of George and Amy (our girl actress) and the fire shots. We also added effects to the shots which included Amy as we wanted to indicate that these were memories from the past and therefore added a black and white effect to illustrate that to the audience. Furthermore, we changed other shots in the video to other shots as we believed that the suited the storyline more such as we changed a shot of George sitting on the bench to a shot of both George and Amy to highlight their relationship. Finally, we changed the shots around to go with a different beat at some points during the music video as we believed this made the music video more interesting.

Production Update

Addition of an actress
We are planning to includea female into our music video. We decided to do this as we feel we needed something else to catch the viewer's attention, because right now there are too many shots of just George, which makes our video a bit repetitive. The female we have chose to use, is Amy as, although it works with our shooting schedule because she if also free these days, she also goes well with our brand, as she is the same age, and fits in with our music video well. By adding a female, this should show our storyline better of George being lost over a girl, which we will show by George and Amy becoming further apart as the music video progresses.

Filming
We are planning to film there shots on, Sunday 11th December and Monday 12 December. On sunday, we are planning to film at night, and do the shots with the fire in at George's house. We just need a few shots at the end of our music video, which will consist of George standing next to the fire, thinking of the girl, and a shot of George from a low angle with the fire infront of him. On Monday, we are going to Morden after school to film the shots needed with George and Amy. We have a few shots ideas, such as both walking away from the camera, and towards the camera, both sitting on the bench together, etc. We will also get some night shots of George and Amy whilst at Morden Park.

Digi Pack Planning

During the planning stage of making our digi pack we decided to use colour to give our pictures more detail making it easier for our viewers to understand what is going on in each picture, however for the actual digi pack we will be using a greyscale colour scheme as well as a khaki coloured font to relate to our theme (loneliness) and them colours relate to our artists costume in our music video.

First Draft Feedback

After handing in our first draft on the 22nd November, which had been completed the day before. We received both a grade and constructive feedback to improve the grade. However, we also got a piece of constructive criticism stating that we needed something else running throughout the video, for example a storyline which keeps being jumped back to. Due to our video becoming very repetitive switching between the artist being alone, then with a guitar and then at a different location. Therefore, we believe that we should get a female performer, and create a storyline around the artist losing the girl, and wanting her to "come home" relating the story line. This storyline may be around 1-1:30 minutes long and it is played periodically thorough the music video, and the spaces around the story are filled with our favourite shots of the current draft.

Editing Post 5

Editing Post - 25th November

On the 25th November we went through our first drafting decidng what shots we liked and therefore will still use in the video and the shots we didnt like and will change or improve as some shots that are included are out of focus, shaky or chop the top of the artists head off and in that case need to be retaken. Additionally, in this editing session we decided to cut some shots to the beat of the snare drum instead of the general beat to the song to see if the shots went better with the beat. The conclusion of this is that at certain parts in the song the shots that cut to the beat of the snare drum are effective and work well with the music but in other areas the snare drum isnt as effective meaning that we will use the general beat for these shots. So in our music video the shot
s used for the chrous and two versus will cut to the beat of the snare drum where as the other shots included will cut to the general beat.

Locations in our music video

Locations included in our music video

Putney Bridge

Putney Bridge will be one of our day time locations as we feel that its an appropriate location for our music video as its iconic and relates to our artist being lonely as in the day Putney Bridge is quite empty.

   Stayton Road

Stayton road will be the location where we will be filming our night time shots, as this round has an alley that we wanted to use as well as a cul-de-sac in order to highlight George's lonelinessand to make him isolated in the location.

Morden Park

Our final location is Morden Park, which was another day time location as we also believe this is a lonely location and will show that our artist is isolated. We hope it will highlight the narrative of our music video.

Reflective Editing Post

Tuesday 1st November

This was our first day of editing, we only had shots for one location which was Morden at this time. We just started our project on Premiere Pro, importing all the shots we have filmed on to the draft and started to link up some lip syncing shots to the correct position in the song. Overall, in this session of editing we foucsed on the establishing shots of Morden at the start of the music video and linked up the shots we had of George lip-syncing to the music using different shots to see what went well with the lyrics and relate the shots we used in our animatic to the shots in our editing project.

 Tuesday 8th November

The following tuesday, we now had shots from Putney and Morden so our editing was mainly to link up the lip syncing shots that we filmed in Putney to the song. Once we done this, we were able to cut shots where we wanted and start making up our music video, using the shots from both Morden and Putney. In conclusion, we used this time to link up our lip syncing shots at Morden and Putney to the correct lyrics in the song as well as cutting some shots to the beat to make the video more effective.

Tuesday 15th November

Now that we had all our shots from 2 locations into Premiere Pro, it meant that we could start making our music video draft by cutting up shots and matching them to the cut of the beat. After this period of 3 hours to edit, we had our shots cutting to the beat as well as verse 1 & 2 nearly complete, with just a few more shots left to use. In order to complete our filming, we need to film at night where we need to start a fire which we are doing on the Sunday 20th November.

Post Production Post 3

Filming date- 11th November

On the 11th November we went back to Putney Bridge to reshoot some shots as some shots from the previsous filming day was blurring and therefore we needed to take some more shots making sure they werent out of focus. Furthermore, we needed to record more singing shots of George as well as shots with the guitar. Additionally, some of the last shots we took had poor lighting but thankfully whilst recording on the 11th the weather was alot better as it was sunny meaning the lighting for the shots are improved as the artist is more noticeable. With the guitar we took some tracking shots, pans, close ups, lens flares and long shots as these were the shots we wanted to use in our music video. However, some shots were a bit shaky so we decided to film some shots more then once to make sure that the shots were steady and in focus in order for us to use them in our video.

Reflective Production Post

Filming days- 21st and 31st October

On Friday 21st October we filmed mainly establishing shots and location shots as our artist, George, wasn't available. This allowed me and Sam to play around with some camera shots and experiment which shots are effective and relate to our genre of music as well as our narrative. Additionally, we tried getting many lense flares and out of focus to in focus shots trying to make our music video look professional and eye-catching. The only problem was some shots we filmed were out of focus and also some shots were too shaky to use in our music video. Next time, we will practice more with the fig rig to make our shots more steady, and to film the shots more than once to try and achieve a better focus. From these 2 filming sessions we can see that, we need to reshoot some shots from morden park which were shaky and need to go to putney bridge and georges house. Our next filming session will be Friday 4th October.

Roles

Your Star Image

Our music video is a rock/indie genre meaning that our star image needs to be fashionable and follow the usual rock/indie costume. Our star will be wearing dark coloured clothing because artists in our genre mainly wear dark colours, mostly black as it is popular in the rock genre. The typical rock artist would be wearing skinny black jeans, with black boots and a type of indie rock top or just a plain dark colour t-shirt/shirt. Props are very common in the genre with an instrument often being played such as drums or a guitar. In A lot of rock music videos there are close up of instruments to highlight the genre of the film. As you can see from the picture on the left, Imagine Dragons and Twenty One Pilots are wearing dark coloured clothing which relates to their genre of music.

Rock/Indie music video analysis 2

Rock/Indie music video analysis 1

Twenty One Pilots- Heathens

Mise-En-Scene

Location- The location of the music video is set in a prison to relate to the story line of the film 'Suicide Squads'.

Costume- At the start of the clip the artist is in an orange jumpsuit to indicate that he is in in prison. However, later on into the video the artist is then released from his jail cell and he then walks into a basement where his costumes changes to casual clothing (2:01) highlighting that he is now free and him and his band partner are back together.

Lighting- 2:31- The use of high key lighting around the stage gives off the sense of freedom to the prisoner as the spotlight is on him and so is the audiences attention. Despite this the use of low key lighting around the outside of the stage and on the prisoners, reminds the artist that he is still trapped in prison and he himself is a prisoner.

Camera Work

Mid shot- 0:27- This shows the viewer the location of the music video and the costumes the actors in the music video are wearing which helps the audience understand the meaning of the video.

Point of view/ Tracking shot- 0:42- Puts the audience in the actors shoes making them wonder what they are about to look at in the jail cell. Additionally, it shows the viewers what the artist is doing and where he is looking illustrating the type on envrinement he is in.

Angled close up- 1:25- Shows the audience how the prisoner is feeling as we can see his facial expressions and how he is acting in the video.

Long shot- 1:45- The long shot shows the change in location from the prison cells to a dark underground tunnel and also shows that the priosner is isolated as he is the only person in the tunnel.

Editing

Cuts to the beat- 0:35/0:36- This makes the music video affective and professional as on the beat the light flickers and the cuts quickly to a wide shot of the prisoner from behind then back to the point of view camera angle creating the sense of terror and isolation.

Special effect- 1:01- The prisoner is looking into a prison cell from the outside but the special effect puts the prisoner in the cell making him look out from the cell.

Conventions of a indie rock music video

Pop Music Video Analysis 2

Jonas Blue- Perfect Strangers

Mise-En-Scene

Location- The location of this film is Cape Town in South Africa, there are various locations used such as the beach, an aquarium and some streets of Cape Town.

Costume- The actors in the music video are wearing casual summery clothing. Additionally, the actors are wearing many different colours such as red, blue, black etc which relate to the colour of clothing the people in Cape Town are wearing. Each time the location in the video changes so does the costume of the actor/actress.

Narrative- It features a woman (Victoria Scholtz) always coincidentally meeting the same man (Devin Dollery) wherever she goes. They then come together to help bring fun to the children in South Africa, with the man introducing them to skateboarding and the woman introducing them to breakdancing while falling in love in the process.

Props- The main prop used in the video is a skateboard as the man in the video introduces the people of Cape Town to skateboarding in order for them to have fun and try something new.

Colour scheme- Bright Colours through out the video until the ending where it is darker due to there being a sunset however creates a romantic effect.

Camerawork

Two Shot- At the start of the video there is a two shot of the man and woman. This shows that they are equal and together and therefore foreshadows the outcome of this music video as they get together and fall in love.

Point of view shot- Puts the audience in the mans position and shows the audience  who the man is staring at. Just before the point of view shot there is a tracking shot behind the girl where you see them walk past one another and the audience witness the man look at the woman so the point of view shot helps understand who the man is looking at.

Close up- There is close ups of both the man and the woman as when they are in the market they both stare each other through pieces of jewellery. The close ups indicate to the audience how they are both feeling as you can see the man smile at the women and the women blushes highlighting how they feel for one another.

Long shot- There is a long shot of when the man jumps of the diving board and the cliff, this helps portray the location of the music video and shows the audience that the location has changed from the previous shot.

Editing

Cuts to the beat- Making the music and the video cut in time making the music video look professional and of high quality. This also quickens up the narrative as each time the music cuts to the beat the location of the video changes which means that there is another occasion of when the man and woman meet.

Fast paced editing- A lot of shots in a short amount of time which keeps with the beat of the music making the video look of a high quality.

Shot reverse shot- This shows the journey of both the male and female actors as one shot goes from the woman in the aquarium, to the man in the aquarium and then finishes with a shot of the woman. The shot reverse shot is used through out the video as it indicates the actors are always together in the same place.

Song choice- Viola Beach: Swings and Waterslides

Viola Beach- Swings and Waterslides

We have chosen to make a music video on Viola Beach ' Swings and Waterslides as they are british which will make it easier for us to lip-sync the song and it is also part of the indie rock genre which is the genre we was focusing on. Addtioanlly, all members of the band and their manager sadly died earlier this year in Sweden as they drove off a bridge.

I have a couple of ideas planned for this video such as walking through the park with the actor on thier own to create isolation, a fire compost bin to highlight the genre that we are basing our video on as the fire will indicate the theme of rock and include light flares to create extra effect and get the audiences attention.

Carol Vernallis Theory

         MoStack- Liar Liar

The video never follows a certain shot order and is unconventional. There are a wide variety of locations and artists that feature within the song. We can see this as at 0:01-0:05 we can see the artist in front of a convenience store with a child beside him. Then at 0:15 he is seen outside the front of a small apartment block with another rapper called 'WSTRN' and again at 0:29 with a rapper named 'Stormzy' standing on the corner of the road near a shop. This emphasises the variation of shot order and location resulting in some then repeated later in the video. Due to there being no shot order, there is a lot of cutaways through the video cutting between locations and rappers in the music video in addition to fast paced editing which relates to the tempo of the music and the pace of the lyrics.

The time, space, character and narrative are introduced at individual and random points within the video as multiple characters are continuously in frame and various points throughout the duration of there song. For example, we are introduce to the main singer MoStack at the beginning at 0:02 and he is seen the majority of the video. However, we are then introduced to other artists such as Konan, Yungen and Wretch 32 that only appear on only a couple of occasions. This random order of shots and introduction of characters also reveals no narrative or story to a viewer which is a feature of a disjuncture type of video, according to Porters theory. The discontinuity draw us away from the narrative. This is in differentiation to what is popular within Hollywood films where there is a unity between time and space. The continuity of a Hollywood film draws the narrative.

Low Budget Music Videos

Group 4- Just got paid

Mise-En-Scene
Costume- All 5 singers are wearing suits making them all look similar and gives them a boy band appearance and suits are also stereotypically known for being expensive.

Location- The location of the music video is at a large/ fashionable house with chandeliers and patterned carpets. Additionally a black dropped background with stage lights creates the appearance of a boy band as the lights focus on the group together or when solos occur during the video.

Lighting- Through out the video there is professional looking lighting as the bright lighting behind the artists make them stand out instead of the background making the audience focus on them more.

Sound
Lip synching- The lip synching is in time with the music making the video look professional.

Camera Work
Camera shots- There are multiple shots of the group being at different locations within the house which keeps the audience intrigued to the video.

Focus- All of the shots in the music video are within focus meaning that no shots are blurry meaning that the audience can see everything in the video clearly.

Editing
The fast paced editing allows the music video flow and look very professional. Additionally the continuous editing and shots also allow the video to flow and is in time with the beat of the music.

Imogen Heap- A-ha!

Mise-En-Scene
Lighting- The high and low key lighting creates an eerie and dark atmosphere. Additionally, the lighting creates shadows and distorted/ blurry images making the audience feel uncomfortable. The bright lighting makes the artist stand out and the audience focus on her.

Location-  There is a use of multiple locations which keeps the audience attracted to the music video.

Sound
Lip Synching- The lip synching in the music video is in time with the music making the music video look professional and of high quality.

Camera work
All the shots included in the video were in focus meaning the audience was able to see everything in the video clearly which makes it look more professional and there is a range of camera shots used throughout the music video.

Editing
Superimposition- This editing technique is used through out the video which makes image distort and go uneven. This stands out to the audience as it is a unique and attractive editing technique.

The fast paced and continuous editing makes the music video look very professional and makes it flow really well which is effective for the audience.
